You’d never want to accept a job offer only to find out a month later that it is not the right fit for you, right? Well it happens more often than you’d think because people get so excited about one or two job details that they forget to look at the big picture.

If you’re wondering if a job offer is the perfect fit for you and your career, here are some questions to ask yourself before you accept that position:

Do Our Values Match?

Is what’s important to you similar to what’s important to the company? If you work best under a flexible schedule, but the company is a strict 9-5 environment, then you may want to keep looking for a new job. Even if the pay is perfect and the commute is reasonable; if you know you’ll be unhappy chained to a desk all day, then decline the offer.

Will Working Here Help Advance My Career?

If you think of this position as a stepping-stone, will this company open or close doors to bigger and better things for you? And will having the name of this company on your resume help or hurt you in 5 or 10 years? Don’t settle for a job simply because of the salary or because they have covered parking (although that’s a nice perk for us in the southern states!).

Do I Have Other Options?

This is an important question, because if the answer is no and you’ve been searching for a job for months, then maybe you need to accept the offer. And maybe it’s time to rethink what’s important to you when it comes to your career. If you’re in a competitive field, in a small town, it’s time to face reality. And possibly move.
