Where Do I See Myself?
Understanding what kind of person you are and what your underlying goals are is huge because that determines what jobs you should look for. Do you really need to work at Google? Would be happier working at a smaller company?
Job seekers need to make a list of their top priorities and compare those to the jobs they’re applying for. Are you looking to move up quickly? Would you like to fill many roles? What if you want to continue your education? Review the company profile against your goals before applying to ensure they align.
What Skills Do I Need?
Before applying for a position, it’s helpful to find a mentor or consult with a recruiter to learn the technical qualifications required for the job, says Kelly Hoey, author of Build Your Dream Network. Lacking one skill isn’t always a disqualifier, some skills can be learned on the job. But, Kelly urges candidates to refer to their contacts for an honest opinion of their technical abilities.
These days, employers are also looking for “soft” skills like work ethic, communication, professionalism, problem-solving ability, and creative thinking, so technical skills alone won’t get you the job. Even if you don’t have tech skills, you can still make it. Networking and persistence pay off. You could get your foot in the door by asking friends for introductions to people they knew in tech, online networking and applying online.
Be realistic about your skills. Your soft skills help sell you, but you must have some technical skills required for the position or it won’t be a great fit for the employer or you.
What’s The Company Culture?
By now, we all research our potential employers online. Social media has made it easy to find out about office culture. Take a look at the profiles of some of the people working at each company. Are they the kind of people you see yourself working with daily?
Keywords are also an indicator of company culture. Throughout a company profile, you’ll find keywords that emphasize company values. The values companies choose to emphasize indicate a lot about a company’s culture.
Finding a company where you fit in well is probably at the top of your list if you’re looking for a tech job. With a little research and preparation, you’ll find the position that’s right for you!
