Remember the saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover”? Well now that you’re an adult, we’ll let you in on a little secret – that’s pretty much b.s. Hope we didn’t ruin anything for you there.
Of course people are judged by their appearance; we’re not saying it’s right, but it’s just how things are.
*Just to clarify, when we say “appearance”, we’re not talking about color of your skin or whether or not you have a large nose. We mean how you present yourself to the world in the way you dress and your mannerisms.
Recently Harris Poll conducted a survey for CareerBuilder where they asked more than 2,500 hiring managers about body language during a job interview. And about 50 percent of them claimed they know within five minutes of meeting a candidate whether or not their a good fit for the position.
Here are the eight body language mistakes you don’t want to make:
- Failing to make eye contact – 67%
- Failing to smile – 39%
- Playing with something on the table – 33% (we can’t believe people do this!)
- Having bad posture – 30%
- Fidgeting too much in their seat – 30%
- Crossing their arms over their chests – 29%
- Playing with their hair or touching their face – 27%
- Having a weak handshake – 21%
As a professional staffing agency, we also notice many people who don’t look people in the eye. From an employer’s perspective, if you don’t easily make eye contact, they can assume that you’re lying or you have something to hide.
