Raise your hand if you want to make more money. Now raise your hand if you hate obvious questions that you know everyone will answer with a “heck yeah!”
This week the Today Show featured a segment on tips on how to ask for a raise. The statistics they shared are sort of mind-blowing:
- 49% of people accept the first salary offer they receive without negotiating
- 56% of people have never asked for a raise
- 15% of people think they will be fired if they ask for a raise
- 0% of companies have never fired someone simply for asking for a raise
We’ve given advice before about how to ask for a raise and it simply comes down to the fact that if you don’t ask for a raise, you won’t get it. You have to be prepared and know exactly what you’re worth and prove your value.
The Today Show advises you to speak with your boss and have everything written down on paper. Explain what you’ve done for the company and how much money you have saved them. If a monetary raise is not possible, ask for additional perks – extra vacation time, work from home days, etc.
