C’mon, you can admit it. Everyone does it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.
We have all Googled ourselves at some point. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing, because as you know there’s a good chance that a potential employer is going to Google you.
Here are some tips so you’re prepared and your social media profile stands out…in a good way:
Freshen Up Your Online Profiles
We’ve mentioned this many times; it’s important to make sure all of your social media profiles are very businesslike. That includes changing your profile photos to professional headshot. Also for your LinkedIn profile, be sure to use keywords, especially in your headline. Hiring managers use simple keywords, like “human resources” when searching for potential employees, so stay away from trendy job titles.
Bonus tip: LinkedIn will allow you to change your URL to your name. Doing this allows recruiters to find you easily, it helps Google rank you well, and it makes you look like you know what you’re doing.
Do you know what people love more than reading? Watching a video. Think about it, if you’re looking for a recipe for the perfect chicken wings and you can choose to watch a quick video or read a long recipe, which will you pick? Same goes with job candidates. Hiring managers want to see your personality as well as your skills.
Have a recording of a talk you gave on tabs versus spaces? Upload it. Or simply record a tutorial on some of your coding tricks. Don’t forget to have a link on your YouTube channel to a personal website and add the video to your LinkedIn profile.
Don’t ‘Set It and Forget It’
Manage your social media profiles regularly. That doesn’t mean you have to constantly upload content, it’s just recommended that you periodically check in, share an industry article, comment on other posts, etc. Join the conversation; you never know who you’ll meet that way.
