You’re New Job is Harder Than You Bargained For…What Should You Do?
After spending months preparing, perfecting your resume and interview skills, researching and filling out applications, you’ve finally completed the interview process and landed what you thought would be your dream job. Unfortunately, you find yourself struggling to understand what’s expected of you and feel a bit overwhelmed.
It’s not an uncommon situation to be in, yet it’s an irritating as well as stressful one just the same. Here are some guidelines to help you navigate these difficult waters.
Gain Some Perspective
Things may not be as bad as they seem. Your feelings of inadequacy may be premature. Talk to your supervisor and get an idea of how you’re doing. It’s quite possible that you’re meeting their current expectations and may expect you to feel exactly as you do. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Consider that every company has their own system and it takes time to get the hang of it. Even with the right skill set and strong overall knowledge base, it can still take time to get in the swing of things. Rather than stress about what you don’t know, establish a realistic timeline for achieving various work goals and review it with management to make sure it is indeed realistic from their perspective.
Request More Training
If you don’t feel you will be able to grasp what’s required, ask for more training. Talk to your supervisor and they’ll assign someone to train you , or at least direct you towards the resources you’ll need to get up to speed.
Some companies offer a mentorship program. Working with an experienced coworker can fast track your learning curve to the benefit of your company as well as yourself.
Your Peer Group is a Resource
Your peer group is an excellent source to help you gain firmer footing at your new job. Getting to know them will help you feel more comfortable and less isolated as you pick up what you need to know to get the job done and hopefully excel in your new position. Shadowing coworkers with similar responsibilities can also help you gain an understanding of the company’s bigger picture.
You might actually find a new friend that can help. If you meet a coworker that you get along well with, admit your struggles and they may be able to direct you to additional resources.

Starting a new job in a new company can be challenging in the best of situations. It’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed while you are learning your responsibilities.
