Answer this job interview question with ease
While there are many questions that get asked in a job interview that you’re not expecting, there are also many interview questions you should be prepared for.
Inevitably, a hiring manager is going to ask you “Why do you want this job?”. Now the answer may seem obvious, but is it what your interviewer wants to hear? And isn’t that what it’s all about anyway?
Yes, the answer is yes.
Here are some mistakes you don’t want to make when you can answer this interview question:
You’re Not Specific About the Position
Yes, you’re the best at what you do and it is important to convey that. But at the same time, you need to actually answer the question of why you want this exact job at this exact company. The hiring manager wants to know how you can be an asset to them in this position and why you want to.
You Seem Selfish
When you answer this interview question, be careful that your answer isn’t just how this job can benefit you. Sure it’s closer to your house and the health insurance is great; you need to explain what you can do for them in this role and express how excited you are to do it.
You Bring Up Your Old Position
Even if your previous position was at a competing company, your interviewer doesn’t want to hear anything negative. So do not answer “why do you want this job?”, with something about why you’re leaving your current job. It just makes you seem petty.
