Have you been searching for the perfect job for, what seems like, a lifetime? There could be some obvious reasons you’re not getting hired, and believe it or not, they could be reasons that are in your control.

Instead of giving up, here are a few ideas that can help jump-start your job search.

  1. Make sure there are NO errors. When it comes to your resume and cover letter, go over both with a fine-tooth comb and make sure there’s not so much as a comma out of place. If you have to, ask someone – anyone – to proofread, do it. Careless mistakes are the quickest way hiring manager weeds out potential employees.
  2. PDF is your friend. Send everything in this universal format. If the hiring manager is using a PC and your resume is in Pages, they won’t be able to easily open and view it. Even if you’re both using Microsoft Word, you never know if the formatting is correct after you hit send. So it’s best to not leave it up to chance; send the files to yourself, a friend and even open them on a mobile device to see how they look.
  3. You’re clearly not customizing your correspondence. If you’re starting your email with “To whom it may concern”, then you’re not taking the time to do the proper research on your potential employer. Would you hire an obviously lazy person? Not addressing a person by name makes you stand out…and not in a good way. Do some work, find the name of the hiring manager, and explain why you’d be a good fit in their specific company.
